In a fiery exchange with Chinese trade officials, United States President Donald Trump demanded that China provide America with magnet supplies, warning that refusal would trigger punitive tariffs up to 200 per cent.
During a politically broadcast town hall event, Trump condemned China’s dominance over rare-earth magnet production, saying:
“If China doesn’t send us those magnets, we’ll hit them with 200 per cent tariffs. It’s about protecting American innovation.”
The U.S. Trade Representative’s office, speaking anonymously, deflected immediate comment. So far, markets show minimal impact, though analysts warn such extreme rhetoric could spark a full-blown trade escalation.
International efforts to diversify rare-earth supply—through collaboration with Japan, Australia, and other partners—are being fast-tracked as the U.S. moves to reduce China’s leverage in strategic minerals.
